To mark the 40th anniversary of the first of the Apollo moon landings on the 20th of July 1969,
Howth based artist Robert Shaw wanted to make a gesture to one of these brave astronauts.
12 men have walked on the moon and only 9 are still alive today.
Dr Edgar Mitchell recently accepted his painting ‘Earthwave’ at his home in Florida.
Ed Mitchell is the sixth man to walk on the moon. He the last surviving member of the three crewmen of Apollo 14

‘Antares’ landed at Fra Mauro ridge, the Moon on Feb 5th 1971.
During his return voyage from the moon Dr Mitchell had what he described as an epiphany

Dr Edgar Mitchell receiving Shaw ‘Earthwave’ painting, Florida, 17th March 2009
"My paintings are about exploring for our innate sense of continuity, connectedness and timelessness.
I have profound respect for these men of Apollo.
It has been estimated that since humankind have evolved to this earth there have been 106 billion lifetimes. 12 men have walked upon the moon. 9 are alive.
I am very proud to present ‘Earthwave’ to one of these extraordinary men.
Edgar Mitchell has taken with him, from the moon, his epiphany of connectedness and has shared.
It’s all we can do. Be inspired to Share."
